Umrah with Elderly Parents – Planning Guide for UK Families

Taking elderly parents for Umrah from the UK

Performing Umrah with elderly parents is one of the most rewarding things you can do as a family. It does require more planning than a standard trip, but with the right preparation you can ensure your parents are comfortable, safe, and able to focus on their worship.

Choosing the right hotel

The single most important decision is hotel proximity to the Haram. For elderly pilgrims, walking distance is everything. Book a hotel within 300 metres of the Haram entrance in both Makkah and Madinah. Many 5-star packages include hotels directly connected to the mosque via air-conditioned walkways, which eliminates outdoor exposure entirely. Ask your agent about wheelchair-accessible rooms and ground floor access.

Wheelchair and mobility support

Wheelchairs are available for hire at both Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi. You can push your parents yourself during Tawaf and Sa’i on the designated wheelchair levels, or hire a local attendant (typically 200-400 SAR). The mosque authorities have also installed electric buggies for movement between the mosque and nearby hotels.

Medical considerations

Consult your parent’s GP before travel. Ensure they have sufficient medication for the trip plus a spare supply. Carry a printed list of medications in English and Arabic. Travel insurance is essential — make sure the policy covers pre-existing conditions and repatriation. Saudi hospitals in Makkah are well-equipped but communication can be a barrier.

Flight comfort

Book direct flights where possible to avoid tiring layovers. Request wheelchair assistance at the airport (available free at all UK airports). If connecting via Istanbul or Dubai, allow at least 3 hours between flights so your parents are not rushed. Many London departures offer direct flights to Jeddah with Saudi Airlines.

Package selection

When comparing packages on HalalTrek, filter for 4 or 5 star hotels and check the distance to Haram. A double room rather than quad sharing gives elderly parents more space and privacy. Some agents offer dedicated elderly care packages with a guide who assists with rituals. Request a custom package if you need specific accessibility features.
